A Child's Blessing

December 2, 2008

Read: Mark 10:13-16

“Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs.”

Last year my first granddaughter, Kelley Elizabeth Strockbine, was born on November 14th. My daughter Jennifer does not attend church regularly but her faith is strong. My single request was that they attend the Christmas Eve service with us. It thrilled me to have them with us during one of the most important services of the year.
When Kelley grew to be about six months old, she would cry when I held her. It did not help that she was that way with most males. Our youngest, J.D. acted the same way toward my father when he was a baby. He just would not go his grandfather without crying. Eventually though, J.D. finally came around. I could only hope that Kelley’s reaction toward me would change.
At Kelley’s first birthday party last month, I was watching for the right time to attempt to hold her. When she had opened her presents, sending tissue paper flying, I decided it was time. J.D. was holding her and she seemed in good spirits. I sat her on my knee at first, testing the waters. A few minutes went by in which Kelley seemed to be just fine.
I pulled her up from my knee while standing up. In the same motion I laid her on my chest. Kelley grabbed my shirt sleeves, giving me the kind of hug every grandparent - or parent for that matter - daydreams about. Such a hug that an audible sigh came from Jennifer’s lips across the room. As if that were not enough, I was late to Bible study because she would not let go. Not that I tried very hard to give her up. God had answered my prayers and I had been blessed by my granddaughter. I look forward to another Christmas Eve Service with my family.

Prayer: Our heavenly Father, as we approach the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, your son, we pray for all of God’s children.

Thought for the Day: During this busy holiday season, take time out to share a few moments with a child. Children are the future of the church and the community.

Peace be with you.
